This week should be an exciting week as I’m taking part in my first ever Entertainment Technology Expo. (November 6–7 at the Burbank Marriott). ETE has been around for quite a few years and I’ve always wanted to attend but this will be my first trip to Burbank for the event. I’m proud to have been asked to present two workshops as part of the event as well a moderate two panel discussions as part of ETE and the Post Production Master Class.

This has been a banner year for an editor from Nashville as most of my yearly conference going consists only of NAB in April. In addition to NAB I found myself teaching several classes at the first ever Southeast Creative Summit just a couple of weeks ago. This week finds me flying out to LA to participate in the Entertainment Technology Expo. This is such an exciting event to participate in since most of my days are spent in a dark edit suite pounding out cuts in this or that NLE. It’s a real treat to be able to talk with a group of fellow editors about tips and techniques that I have gathered over a decade in the edit suite. As I mentioned in an article about the SCS I learn as much from these types of sessions as I hope the attendees do.

The workshops are part of the ETE paid sessions and quite affordable ranging from $25 for one session to $125 for a two day all access pass. There are many different sessions available including some taught by fellow PVC writers. You can see the complete rundown of both sessions and panels at the ETE event schedule (as well as a link to registration).

Here are the two sessions I’m leading:

Useful Tools for Editing and Post Production – Building your Editors Toolbox (Nov. 6 11:00am – 1:00pm)

Beyond just the non-linear editing applications that we use in post-production there’s a plethora of other applications that can make the life of an editor a little bit easier and often a bit less frustrating. Some of these tools are free, some of them cost money but many of them become very important in the editor’s toolbox. Often these tools aren’t only applications on the desktop but also iPhone or iPad apps as well as online services. This session will look at a number of those tools and how editors can use them in their day-to-day operation.

Anatomy of an Edit (Nov. 6 1:30pm – 3:30pm)

Most editors have their own way of setup and organization when it comes to a large editorial and post-production project. Others might not have any plan at all. The more organized a project is the easier it is to find media, find versions and track the entire post-production process. This session will look at one method for taking a job through initial ingest all the way through finishing. These tips and techniques can be useful for a single editor working alone or several editors working together.

The other thing I’m doing as part of this event is moderating a couple of panel discussions.

As part of ETE there will be a Pro Video Coalition writers panel Thursday morning from 10:30am – 11:30am. This is a rare opportunity for PVC writers to engage in a discussion about our work, the previous year as well as what we expect in the year to come. The PVC panelists include:

The Latest Flow in Digital Workflow

Join a panel of post professionals who will discuss the latest trends in topics such as set to screen workflow and its impact on the bottom line, “Post On Demand,” ownership of look and color and the challenges of global collaboration.
