We applaud AbelCine for updating its unique interactive Field of View Comparator to include the recently announced Blackmagic Cinema Camera. This camera’s sensor size joins many other sizes and even some specific camera models from manufacturers and brands like Arri, Canon, Panasonic, Panavision, Phantom, RED, and Sony. Of course, the AbelCine Comparator continues to include standard HD sensors including 2/3“, 1/2”, 1/3“, and 1/4” used by several manufacturers. Just select one sensor size or camera model on the left side, another on the right, and select the lens’s native focal length in the middle, and voilà… Ahead in this article, you’ll see some examples which compare the field of view of a Super35mm sensor, the Blackmagic Cinema Camera sensor, a 1/2″ HD sensor, and a 1/3″ sensor.
A comparison of the field of view of a Super 35mm sensor (like those used in a Canon C300/C500 or Sony’s F35, F3, FS100, or FS700) to that of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, using a native 25mm lens on either camera.
A comparison of the field of view of a 1/2“ sensor (like those used in a Sony EX1/EX1R/EX3) to that of the camera using a 1/3” sensor (like those used in many HD cameras), using a native 25mm lens on either camera (or a zoom set for that native focal length on either camera).
The only important size that is currently missing (to my knowledge) from the AbelCine Field Of View Comparator is the 1/2.88“ size sensor used by the Sony NX70 (HXR-NX70) (which I am currently evaluating for an upcoming review) and the Sony NX30 (HXR-NX30) about which I published a “first look” yesterday. The 1/2.88” size is larger than 1/3“, but smaller than 1/2”. I really hope that AbelCine will add this 1/2.88" size to their Comparator sometime soon.
