A Year in Review

As we come to the close of 2011 and celebrate this holiday season, it is a good time to reflect on the year past. 2011 has been a year of many challenges and wins in our industry, a number of which mirror what we have experienced at Createasphere.

In 2011, Createasphere produced seventeen events over three continents and acquired ProVideoCoalition.com. Bringing ProVideoCoalition under our umbrella brought our online audience to over a million unique visitors annually, gathering over ten thousand in person in the process. In conceiving of every one of our events, and bringing ProVideoCoalition into the fold, we continue to strive to offer our community uncommon value, extensive choices, and important opportunities. That motivation is the foundation of all that we do.

The year kicked off with so many exciting opportunities and options for content creators. The impact of technologies like the iPad, on-set tools, and data centric processes continue to make Silicon Valley and Hollywood kissing cousins.

In March, we saw the tragedy of the earthquake and tsunami that impacted all our Japanese partners. They demonstrated then, and continue to do so, an unstoppable optimism and maturity to get back to work and get back to order.

The tape shortage that resulted from the tsunami was a kick start to the proliferation and acceptance of the file-based workflow, challenging the many productions that used tape. The impact of this deadly natural disaster was to hasten the movement of many, of if not all, network productions to a tapeless workflow, or to remain on film. Incredibly, at the end of the day, nature pushed the technological change in a way that little else could.

April also brought more change to the industry with Apple’s exit from the professional market, giving our post production community new choices for investment and commitment.

Bollywood premiered its first 3D feature film, hailed in the summertime with much speculation and interest, while 3D in US theaters remains a hotly debated topic. We look to 2012 to see what the next phase of 3D – exhibition, in home, mobile – will bring to our industry and consumers.

The autumn brought a wave of cameras that will once again shape acquisition and lens choices with the biggest impact being cost and increased quality. It also brought the news that Arri, Aaton and Panavision will no longer manufacture film cameras. Change is in the air…

At Createasphere we are clearly and directly focused on bringing you, our community, valuable ways to further your career and further your craft. We have events worldwide throughout the year, and we are available to you 24/7, globally, through ProVideoCoalition.com.

Happy holidays and we look forward to connecting with you in 2012.
