I spoke with Danfung, and he provided the following details:

“This video is a preview of a story on how key to US military counter-insurgency strategy is winning the hearts and minds of the Afghans, yet operations resulting in civilian casualties is creating immense hostility among Afghans and pushing them toward the insurgency.

Next week, I return to Afghanistan to embed with US 1st Infantry Division in the Korengal Valley, an area were some of the fiercest fighting has occurred. I will also try to visit the village of Granai, where the Afghan government reports 140 civilians were killed by US air strikes on May 4th.

With the first of Obama’s new 20,000 arriving in Afghanistan now, and a summer of the heavy fighting to come, losing public support over civilian casualties will become a key issue.

It was shot on a 5D II with a MKE 400, relying mostly on a 35mm f/1.4 lens. I found without manual control, it was like trying to drive a Ferrari without a steering wheel- frustrating to say the least. I am returning with a Glidcam 2000 for stabilization attached to a custom built rig with a Sennheiser ME 66 and G2 Wireless system, and a Beachtek DXA-2S running into the 5D II for sound.”
