RED ONE: Obsolete Already?

Adam Wilt | 11/16- 11:54 PM

Where does the current RED hubbub leave the RED ONE?

With last Thursday’s epic announcement (pun intended) from RED, the other shoe has fallen.

Four years ago at DV Expo 2004, a couple of folks working on what was then simply called the “Oakley Special Project” took me aside to discuss a top-secret operation, launched in a remote mountain stronghold in southern California. Eccentric millionaire playboy Jim Jannard (it seems like most modern superheroes have that as a lifestyle description), a camera fancier with something like 1,500 cameras in his personal collection, had decided to build the One Camera to Rule Them All… only it wasn’t one camera.

Economies of Scope

image

Six months ago I posted an article here with 10 reasons (and a bonus speculation, which now seems way off) why Scarlet would “change the game in 2009.” At that time, Scarlet was RED’s “entry level” camera, explicitly designed to capture indy filmmakers and “soccer… more »

Podcasting is NOT Dead

Podcast, Webisode, or Netcast… doesn’t matter…

image

I just need to rant for a second… I am sick and tired of people claiming that podcasting is dead. The truth is that it is far from it. While the names and flavors may change, podcasting is alive and well. Here’s what I have spent the past week doing.

I spoke in New York City for 3 days at the NY Post Conference. I was joined… more »

In which a series of tests becomes the fastest spec spot shoot in history

About a week and a half ago I received an email from Leigh Blicher, partner at Videofax in San Francisco. “Just wanted to let you know our F35 has arrived.” My response read something like this: “Ooo! Oh! Oh oh oh! Ooooo oh oh OH! Oh! OHHHHH! Can I come over and PLAY?”

fix it in Color Finesse - or adapt it to Color

image

This week I balance and fix a dark image in Synthetic Aperture’s Color Finesse color correction application, but if you are using Apple Color, you can adapt this easily to Color by using the Master Gain, Gamma and Pedestal and the Advanced Tabs Red, Green and Blue gain, gamma and pedestal controls. You could also do this correction using Curves and guide your corrections using eyedroppering instead of using an RGB Parade waveform monitor… more »

Meeting the challenges of today’s weak economy

Steve Hullfish | 11/13- 07:39 AM

Bringing home the production bacon

Last year was my best year ever. Huge projects and lots of them. Plenty of work to pass out to the great freelancers that I knew. This year… not so much. Actually this year is my worst year. From feast to famine.

So what am I doing about it? Losing sleep? Yes. But this is an inspirational and motivational column to convince you to wear out some shoe leather and burn up the phone lines.

There’s still work out there. Someone is doing it. So how do you get a piece of… more »

EIGHT new cameras announced today from Red - new lenses too!

image

Today Red announced 8 (yes, EIGHT) new cameras. Sensors range from 2/3” to 186x56mm (yep, that’s 7 1/3 by 2 1/5 INCHES), with resolutions from 3K to 28K, with prices from $2500 to $55,000 for the “brains” of the units (more on that below). Incredibly modular to a Legos or Erector Set degree. There’s a HUGE amount of information up on Red’s website here, but… more »
